Hiway: specialist supplier to the construction industry

Back when Hiway was established 40 years ago (as Hiway Stabilsiers), its origins were in land development and the need for improving roading infrastructure. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength, branching out into Australia 15 years ago to grow its footprint. As new opportunities have come to market, Hiway has adapted its core expertise to take on these new challenges and push the envelope. The ‘give it a go’ philosophy has been a core value that has defined its place in the market as an industry leader.

Recently, Hiway Stabilisers has rebranded to Hiway. This reflects the business’s evolution beyond being a specialist provider of soil and pavement stabilisation. Hiway now offers a range of recycling, reuse and environmental capabilities to meet the changing needs of the civil construction market. Asset owners are wanting solutions that do more with less, all at a lower price point and with lower emissions. Hiway has challenged the status quo to provide solutions that meet the needs of a changing road network with more limited funding.

Stabilisation and recycling of pavements continues to be a core product offering. The roading environment relies on the use of in situ materials or the addition of locally sourced materials for pavement construction and renewal or rehabilitation. The design of pavement systems using binders specific to the pavement requirements and materials at hand allows for a performance advantage with a smaller environmental impact.

Pavement recycling undertaken after previous weather events has shown to deliver robust performance. Since the 2010 Queensland floods and the more recent Cyclone Gabrielle weather event, foamed bitumen pavement rehabilitation undertaken by Hiway has stood up to the challenge. This has helped maintain connectedness for local communities when these events occur. Investing in resilient infrastructure, such as robust pavement systems, can provide a lifeline to communities that have previously been cut off during these events.

More recently, Hiway has expanded its product offering to include the Master™ range of products, which provide added value to customers’ existing pavement systems. The inclusion of the Master range is redefining how the industry views inherent issues with current delivery systems. For instance, the MasterScrim™ technology utilises existing free binder to add macrotexture to flushed pavements, using new chip in the wheel paths. Re-texturising the pavement surface seeks to correct a deficient binder–stone ratio. Other products in the range address other failure mechanisms, including dust suppression and pavement strengthening with low or negative carbon emissions.

As the needs of the market continue to change, Hiway will look to innovate to provide solutions.
