Greening the Superhub: supporting long-term environmental resilience at Ruakura

Ecology and sustainable landscape management have been central to Boffa Miskell’s work on the 610-hectare Ruakura Superhub, including the integration of a 50-hectare green space network of swales, wetlands, and reserves. Comprising more than 10 per cent of the site, these features are designed to manage stormwater, enhance biodiversity and provide ecological connectivity across the multi‑use development.

Boffa Miskell’s planners, landscape architects and ecologists contributed extensively to the masterplanning and consenting processes. During the private plan change phase, Boffa Miskell prepared and presented expert evidence to the Board of Inquiry, ensuring that environmental values were embedded in the planning framework.

Specific ecological measures included the design and integration of natural stormwater systems (swales and wetlands), habitat restoration, and the protection of existing ecological corridors. These initiatives support water quality improvement, native species habitat creation, and long-term ecological resilience.

In subsequent stages, Boffa Miskell supported resource consent applications for land development and infrastructure, backed by detailed ecological assessments. Its work ensures that ongoing development at Ruakura complies with regional and national environmental standards, by securing consents for strategic infrastructure while maintaining ecological integrity.

Boffa Miskell’s ongoing involvement with Tainui Group Holdings continues to prioritise sustainable landscape and ecological outcomes, aligning with Waikato‑Tainui’s intergenerational vision for stewardship of their whenua.
