Hiway Stabilizers was founded more than 35 years ago, and has grown from humble beginnings to become Australasia’s largest in situ recycling specialist, and, reportedly, the second-largest in the world.
The focus 35 years ago was heavily centred on ground improvement. Therefore, stabilisation was a key feature in branding and, equally, the innovative solutions that give Hiway Stabilizers a strong reputation in providing to its customers.
The market is changing, however, and clients are strongly focused on decarbonisation in support of reducing the impacts of climate change, which we are all experiencing. Although Hiway Stabilizers’ historical solutions provided for up to a 50 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, the company has further responded through the development of a suite of carbon-zero pavement solutions that take innovation and client value to an all-new level.
These new products provide clients with a true low-carbon pavement solution, and work across all sectors of transportation, including road, rail, ports, airports, mining and renewables. With the strong focus on recycling, reuse and decarbonisation, Hiway Stabilizers is also reshaping its identity and consolidating its differing brand identities across New Zealand and Australia into a single brand: HIWAY. This change reflects the future requirements of its customers, who traditionally looked for a ground improvement stabilisation solution. Now and in the future, customers are focused on the journey – and the communities we all work hard to serve – through the building of sustainable roads to get from A to B.
With the changes to our climate and the impacts of severe weather events, decarbonisation, and a drive to recycle and reuse more of our precious resources, has never been more important. While HIWAY has risen to the challenge and provides industry-leading innovative recycling and low-carbon pavement solutions and products, it also realises that the resilience of a transportation network is equally important. Resilience ensures that the network can maintain its operability during extreme weather events.
As an example, HIWAY has pioneered the introduction of foamed bitumen recycling in New Zealand and Australia, providing a commercially advantageous structural pavement layer that provides unparalleled levels of resilience during wet weather when compared to traditional granular solutions. It is the improvements in pavement resilience, coupled with the reduction in carbon emissions and the saving of New Zealand’s natural resources through reuse, that is really making heads turn, and shining a spotlight on the future of our transportation requirements.
