kwik-zip: supporting long-term performance

In trenchless construction, microtunnelling plays an important role in delivering accurate, low-impact pipeline installations beneath busy urban environments. While many projects use direct installation – where the jacked pipe becomes the final service conduit – some require a casing and carrier pipe arrangement. In these situations, kwik-ZIP spacer systems provide important benefits by protecting the pipeline, maintaining alignment and supporting long-term performance.

Casing and carrier pipe systems are commonly specified where additional structural protection or operational flexibility is needed, such as beneath rail lines and major roads, in environmentally sensitive areas, or where the carrier pipe cannot withstand jacking forces. A larger casing is installed by microtunnelling, then a smaller carrier pipe is inserted inside it. In these applications, keeping the carrier pipe centralised is essential to avoid uneven loading, abrasion and long-term performance issues.

Developed in Australia and used internationally in trenchless applications, kwik-ZIP centraliser and spacer systems are designed to support carrier pipes within casings. They help maintain consistent clearance and alignment throughout installation. By keeping the carrier pipe evenly positioned, kwik-ZIP spacers reduce point loading, protect coatings and support uniform grout flow where required.

Protecting pipe coatings during insertion is especially important. If the carrier pipe contacts the casing, coatings can be damaged by abrasion. kwik-ZIP spacers prevent this by centralising the pipe within the casing, keeping it evenly supported and off potentially abrasive surfaces.

A major advantage of kwik-ZIP systems is their advanced thermoplastic construction. Unlike traditional steel or timber spacers, they are corrosion-resistant, chemically inert, and suitable for a wide range of soil and groundwater conditions. Their low-friction design also makes carrier pipe insertion smoother, which is valuable on longer drives and in installations with tight tolerances.

The modular design of kwik-ZIP spacers also improves onsite efficiency. Segmented components can be assembled quickly around the carrier pipe without specialised tools, allowing contractors to adapt to different pipe diameters and project requirements with minimal delay.

Compliance is another key consideration. kwik-ZIP systems are manufactured under rigorous quality controls, and are AS/NZS 4020 tested for use in contact with potable water. They also align with Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) specifications commonly referenced by Australian water utilities.

kwik-ZIP spacers are designed to meet the requirements of WSAA Product Specification 324 for casing spacers, with the HD, HDX and HDXT models certified against this specification.

These systems are widely accepted across water, wastewater and infrastructure sectors, helping engineers and asset owners to meet regulatory requirements while supporting reliable long-term performance.

As microtunnelling continues to support the expansion and renewal of underground infrastructure, dependable solutions for specialised installations remain essential.

Where casing and carrier pipe systems are required, kwik-ZIP spacers are more than accessories – they are critical components that protect pipeline integrity, improve installation efficiency, and contribute to successful project outcomes.
